Welcome!

The first annual Winthrop Marathon will be held September 26 2010. Starting on the edge of the Pasayten Wilderness in the Okanogan National Forest the course will follow the Chewuch River on Forest Service and rural county roads to the "western" town Winthrop in the heart of the beautiful Methow River Valley. The USATF certified, "net downhill" course is located on the sunny side of the North Cascades so there's a good chance the weather will be perfect for running, enjoying the views and hanging out with friends and family at the finishline. And yes it's a "Boston Qualifier"!!!

Course Info:
Starting on the edge of the of the Pasayten Wilderness in the Okanogan National Forest at an altitude of 3300ft the course loses 1000ft in the first 10 miles as it follows the wild Chewuch River to the "western" town of Winthrop. In all the race loses 1800ft and gains just 250 for a net loss of 1550ft. The first three miles are on packed dirt road and the remainder is on asphalt and the entire route even when approaching town has very little vehicle traffic. The first 18 miles are in the national forest, the next seven are on rural county roads and the final mile makes it way to downtown on town streets. The Course will be USATF certified 26.2 miles and can be used as a "Boston Qualifier". MAPS ELEVATION PROFILE

Transportation to the Start:
All runners must take the provided buses to the start. NO GETTING DROPED OFF AT START. The buses will depart from the Winthrop Barn 1/4 mile west of downtown Winthrop on Hwy 20 within walking distance from all the Winthrop motels. Parking is limited so please walk or carpool. Departure time to be determined--stay tuned. Your warm clothes will be transported back to the finishline--please bring a bag labeled with your name and bib number to keep things tidy and so you don't lose your favorite jacket or whatever.

Course Support and Rules:
There will be aid stations every 2-3 miles starting at mile 3. All the aid stations will have water and nuun electrolyte replacement drink, toilet paper, vaseline, and band-aids and there will be toilets at a few aid stations as well as the start and finish. Gels will be at every other aid station after the halfway mark. Spectators and crew are only alllowed at the designated specator locations(see below)--runners getting support from anyone other than volunteers or race staff outside of those spectator areas will be disqualified. No baby joggers allowed on the course. The course is planned to be open for only 7 hours--if you think you'll take more than 7 hours please email james@rainshadowrunning.com to discuss it.

Spectators:
This is not a very spectator friendly race, there are only 3 spots on the course where your friends or family could see you during the race (mi ~12, ~19, and the finish) and they must follow these directions exactly. Winthrop and the Methow valley are however full of things for your friends and family to do while you run. One great option for them is to volunteer at an aid station--they get see you on the course and get a free ticket for the pre and post race meals and you get to run for free!

Lodging:
The Chewuch Inn and Sun Mountain Lodge are two good options. For other options check out the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce or Central Reservations

Weather:
Located on the sunny and dry side of the state there's a good chance the sky will be clear and blue. The average temperatures for the start are 35-40 degrees and by midday it'll likely be in the high 60's or low 70's-- perfect running weather! But this is the mountains so anything is possible...

Teri Pieper, of Reflected Light Studios, did an amazing job capturing the joys and struggles of running the Winthrop Marathon. There are tons of great pictures from many different locations on the course.

For $7.50 you can purchase from Teri a file that can be printed at a standard print resolution.Contact her to buy a file or two or to hire her for your next event at tjpieper@methownet.com

Also Kristen Smith of MVSTA, hung out at the finish and did a great job getting cool photos of folks crossing the line and hanging out. MVSTA who (in addition to being super duper supportiive of all the Rainshadow Running races) puts on a bunch of trail running, mountain biking and ski races in the world famous Methow Valley.

The entry fee is $70 or $80 after 5 pm on August 26 2010 and it includes pre-race pasta dinner, transportation to the starting line from downtown Winthrop, finisher's medal, chance for drawing prizes and post race meal/party.

A commerative, high quality, long-sleeve, Patagonia tech(Capilene1) shirt can be purchased for an additional $25. (These shirts tend to be smaller than average but in my opinion the average shirt is oversized so plan accordingly)
